Educational DVD for Children

Sep 2010 Whether in the classroom or in the home, an educational DVD for children can be beneficial to your child. Although most parents would agree that they would rather their child watches an educational DVD instead of a more commercial one there can be a number of reasons for them to shy away from this.

Perhaps they think their child may be bored, however this need not be the case as there are DVDs available they can entertain as well as inform. An educational DVD for children can be started at a young age as the infant does not necessarily have to engage with the content but can take it in passively. The benefit of putting on a DVD is the parent has complete control over what their child is watching. When the parent sits their child in front of the television, although they may be watching a children’s channel the parent can never be 100% sure of the content their child is viewing. Some parents are particularly concerned over advertising and this can easily be avoided by the use of a DVD.

An educational DVD for children of a younger age focuses more on the audio and video aspect, by using bright colours and catchy tunes in order to catch a baby’s or toddler’s attention. Once the child is older they can be introduced to a range of interactive DVDs. These enable the parent to give the child the remote control and to interact with the content. This is a significant development as instead of the child sitting in front of the television they can actively learn. To engage with content has been shown as one of the most effective ways of learning, it is the reason why teachers get their pupils involved in lessons by asking individual questions and getting then to carry out tasks with materials. An interactive DVD can be reassuring for the parent and alleviate the guilt of placing their child in front of the television.

Choosing a suitable age recommendation for an educational DVD for children should be taken into account when purchasing. This will usually be printed on the packaging and will be a good indicator of the age range at which the child is going to get the most from the DVD intellectually. It is not a warning of unsuitable content but more to ensure that the parent does not waste their time showing a DVD to their child from which they will not learn anything. A DVD with a lot of dialogue will be of little use to a baby.

Care should be taken over any scientific claims towards the benefits of a particular product. Clearly if a manufacturer of a range of DVDs can put a recommendation on the front of the DVD packaging then they are going to do so. Outwardly this may look quite impressive but it can sometimes be unclear as to who has funded the study so this should be approached with caution. A parent’s judgement can often be best way to evaluate what their child’s needs and wants are.
